The Ideology and Politics Journal (IPJ) aims to develop an interdisciplinary platform for debates of informed and non-partisan researchers in the fields of political science, sociology, political economy, social philosophy, intellectual history, and cultural studies. Devoted to advancing the understanding of socio-political and cultural processes worldwide, the IPJ publishes special issues aimed at specific regions and cultural trends. In 2024, the Special Issue of IPJ will be focused on the negative attitudes towards the West and the USA in today’s European and post-Soviet societies.

Since the times of discovering new lands in the Western hemisphere, America became a symbol of new life, new opportunities, new Eden. For hundreds of thousands of migrants, America turned into a new home with possibilities to change life for the better and to achieve unimaginable. American Revolution and War for Independence made the USA a symbol of freedom, democracy, progress, and the American Dream: possibilities for everyone who workі hard. At the same time, America became an object of criticism, primarily from the European elites who saw American society as cruel, uncultured, and without good taste, manners, and education. Later on when the USA became an active actor on the international stage critiques spread on the American government and foreign policy. Thus, critical approaches towards the USA, American policy, society, and culture transformed into the phenomena of anti-Americanism. Today we can find anti-American sentiments both inside and outside the USA, among American opponents and partners.

In this special issue of Ideology and Politics Journal, we call on researchers of social and cultural studies, including politics, ideology, religion, literature, media, and history, to submit their contributions devoted to the negative perception of the West and America in today’s European and post-Soviet societies. In particular, we seek to address the following aspects of this overarching topic:

  • Origins of anti-American/anti-Western sentiments in today’s Europe and post-Soviet states
  • Westernization/Americanization as an explanation/excuse of the negative attitudes towards the West/the USA
  • Anti-American/anti-Western narratives in social networks, academia, cinema, advertising, literature, popular culture, etc.
  • Hostility towards the West/America as a means of self-identity
  • Anti-Americanism as a tool of political manipulation
  • Pro- and anti-Americanism in post-communist states as a reflection of choice between East and West?
  • Case studies of liberal, social, sovereign-nationalist, radical and other anti-Americanisms
  • Anti-Americanism as an ideology
  • Anti-American/anti-Western sentiment in politics
  • Anti-Americanism and justice and equality narratives

Articles submitted to the issue are expected to address the proposed topics from the perspectives of political science, ideology, cultural and media studies, as well as history and literature analysis. Comparative and interdisciplinary researches are warmly welcome.
